From Heraklion | From Herakleion: Full Day Trip to Preveli Beach

PREVELI TROPICAL BEACH

The beach of Preveli, also known as Lake Preveli or Phoenix, is located at the exit of the imposing Kourtaliotikos Gorge, where the Grand River (Megalos Potamos) flows. It is certainly the most famous beach in South Crete, accepting thousands of visitors every summer. During the ‘60s and ‘70s, it was a favorite destination for the hippies. On the banks of the Grand River there is a large colony of Theophrastus palm trees, which give the region a sense of a tropical landscape. This is the second largest palm forest of Crete, after the palm forest of Vai. The river forms a small lake, 500m long, before emptying into the sea. You can walk along the river, under the shade of palm trees, and start ascending in the beautiful canyon. At the exit of the river, a beautiful beach with pebbles and sand is formed. Moreover, in the eastern part of the beach, there is a beautiful rock reminding of a heart. You will have plenty of free time here to enjoy swimming in the turquoise waters, to sunbathe under the warm sun and to explore this tropical and very unique landscape. The bus will stop at a parking lot, the closest to the beach, where a path that descends to the beach starts. The parking is located near towering vertical cliffs, where you can take some fantastic photos. To reach the beach walk the footpath (app. 300 stairs) that takes about 15 minutes. After, approximately 4 hours free time at the beach the day will end and we will make our way back to your hotels. 10:45 Arrival at Preveli – free time 15:00 Departure from Preveli 16:50 Arrival in Heraklion
